Thanks, Laura. I agree completely; the Open Air Market is another great community meeting-place. Something about events wrapped around food makes them almost fool-proof.

The low-cost meals available around town (e.g., Spaghetti Dinner, Fri. evening at the Four Square) are more examples of events that bring people out for social interaction around food, and they are wonderfully successful little subcultures, with many regular attendees and a real sense of community.

Another good one is the monthly packing day for the Good Food Box, which again has food at its core.

I hope we can find ways to keep creating opportunities for people to meet and exchange ideas and stories and find ways to work together. No community can ever have too much solidarity.

Nice post, David, well written with interesting ideas. When you describe more events like Seedy Saturday, I thought of the Open Air Market. It has many of the same qualities--a gathering that has a purpose at its roots. People go to the Open Air Market to purchase fresh, local and organic food, but while they are there, they engage in conversations, with old and new friends, vendors, acquaintances. I always leave with a spring in my step, as you describe, looking forward to preparing the delicious food I purchased. The Open Air Market is an important link in our community and I'm very appreciative of the volunteers, vendors and organizers who make it happen.
